Mponeng Mine Contact Details

Mponeng is one of Harmony Gold underground operations west of Johannesburg and one of the deepest mines in the world. Harmony publishes no telephone number for the mine itself, so every route below is a company level one.

Official contact channels

Note the recruitment and bursary numbers carry an 018 code, which is North West rather than Johannesburg. That is not an error: Harmony gold operations are concentrated in the Free State and North West gold fields, and its recruitment function sits there rather than at the Randfontein head office.

Two cautions about what is on Harmony contact page. The 011 692 3879 number printed beside the switchboard is labelled as a fax and will not ring. And several of the contacts listed there, for corporate social investment, new business and corporate affairs, are individual staff mailboxes rather than desks. Those are not reproduced here, because a personal work address stops working the day that person changes role.

What this organisation provides

Mponeng sits within a group of South African underground operations that also includes Doornkop, Joel, Kusasalethu, Masimong, Moab Khotsong, Target 1, Tshepong North and Tshepong South, alongside surface operations such as Kalgold, Central Plant Reclamation, Phoenix, Savuka and Mine Waste Solutions. Harmony also operates outside South Africa, in Australia and Papua New Guinea, and its honesty hotline publishes separate numbers for each of those countries.

Address and operating information

There is no public counter at a working gold mine and no visitor entrance. Access to the shaft complex is controlled, and anyone attending for an interview, an induction or a contract meeting will be expected at a specific gate with documentation arranged in advance. The Randfontein address above is the office to write to.

Support and escalation routes

If you are looking for work, use the careers portal and the recruitment address above and nothing else. Deep level mine jobs are among the most impersonated in South Africa: a legitimate mine does not recruit through a WhatsApp group, does not ask you to pay for a medical, an induction or a placement, and does not ask for a deposit for accommodation before an offer exists. Any request for money is the scam, whatever documents accompany it.

For safety, the route is statutory rather than corporate. Unsafe working conditions at a mine are reported to the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate at the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, and under the Mine Health and Safety Act an employee has a legal right to leave a working place that presents a serious danger to health or safety. That right does not depend on permission from a supervisor. The Harmony Honesty Hotline on 0800 204 256 is for reporting illegal or unethical activity anonymously and is a separate channel from a safety report.

Community and environmental matters relating to a specific operation fall under the mine social and labour plan and are dealt with by the regional office of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy rather than by head office.
