SACNASP, in full the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions, is the statutory council set up under the Natural Scientific Professions Act 27 of 2003 to register and regulate natural scientists in South Africa.
SACNASP registers scientists in three categories: Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat), Certificated Natural Scientist (Cert.Sci.Nat) and Candidate Natural Scientist (Cand.Sci.Nat). Health-science clinicians register with the HPCSA and engineers with ECSA instead.

Most tasks are done on the SACNASP portal at portal.sacnasp.org.za, where you can apply, pay, upgrade, update your details and print your certificate. New applicants register at portal.sacnasp.org.za/register.
How to register with SACNASP
- Read the requirements for registration and the document checklist on the SACNASP website.
- Apply on portal.sacnasp.org.za, upload your documents and pay the application fee.
- Wait for evaluation, which takes about four to six months once all documents are supplied in clearly legible form.
- To check your status, email registrations@sacnasp.org.za with your full name and reference, registration or ID number in the subject line.
SACNASP registration fees
- Application fee, Professional and Certificated Natural Scientist: R2,560.00
- Application fee, Candidate Natural Scientist: R650.00
- Upgrade fee: R2,030.00
- Appeal fee: R3,390.00, refunded if the appeal succeeds
Annual fees are due each year by 31 March. The 2026/2027 fee schedule can be downloaded from the SACNASP fee page.
Printing your SACNASP certificate
Log in to the portal with your registration number. The first-time password is your ID or passport number. You can then print your certificate.
What SACNASP handles
The Natural Scientific Professions Act 27 of 2003 requires all practising natural scientists to register with SACNASP (sections 18(1) and 20(2)(a)). SACNASP evaluates applications, keeps the register, collects annual fees and deals with complaints against registered scientists. Anyone can check whether a scientist is registered by searching the name or registration number at sacnasp.org.za/scientists.
Complaints and escalation process
- Email the details of your complaint against a registered scientist to sacnasp@sacnasp.org.za.
- To report anonymously, use the whistleblower site at www.behonest.co.za.
- If an application is refused, you can appeal; the appeal fee is R3,390.00 and is refunded if the appeal succeeds.
