Official Absa fraud reporting route
Report fraud on your Absa account or card to the Fraud Hotline on 0860 557 557. Absa also lists the same hotline as +27 (0) 11 501 5089, which is the number to use from outside South Africa. If a card is lost, stolen or you think it has been compromised, block it straight away in the Absa Banking App, or call 011 501 5050 or 0800 11 11 55.
Forward suspicious emails that claim to come from Absa to secmon@absa.co.za. The 3D Secure call centre on +27 (0) 11 354 4058 deals with verifying online card purchases.
Absa’s safety pages warn about phishing, vishing, SMiShing, SIM swap and 419 scams. If Absa suspects a fake SIM swap, it may place a temporary hold on the account.
Note that 0861 462 273, which also appears on Absa’s safety page, is a credit card sales line and not a fraud number.
What you need before contacting Absa
Have your card or account details ready, and note the dates and amounts of any transactions you do not recognise. Never give anyone your online PIN or password, logon details, card PIN, CVV or OTP. Absa calls these the “keys to the safe”.
This matters for the Absa Digital Fraud Warranty, a free warranty on all digital transactions that Absa introduced on 15 August 2019 for customers who transact responsibly. The warranty requires that you did not disclose any of those details.
If you entered a wrong card PIN three times, the card locks and must be unlocked at a branch.
Step-by-step contact process
- Block the card immediately in the Absa Banking App, or call 011 501 5050 or 0800 11 11 55 for lost or stolen cards.
- Call the Fraud Hotline on 0860 557 557 (or +27 11 501 5089) to report the fraud.
- Forward any phishing emails to secmon@absa.co.za.
- For a loss on a digital transaction, report it through the Fraud Hotline or the click-to-call option in the app. Absa’s Fraud Solutions team then contacts you to assess the Digital Fraud Warranty claim.
Escalation route
Absa does not publish a separate escalation line for fraud on its safety pages. Stay with the Fraud Hotline and Fraud Solutions, and keep a record of reference numbers and the names of agents you speak to. Absa Bank Limited (registration number 1986/004794/06) is a registered credit provider, NCRCP7, with its head office at Absa Towers West, 15 Troye Street, Johannesburg.
For other banks and lenders, browse the banking and finance hub or the banking directory A listings.
