Volkswagen roadside assistance: what it covers and when

Roadside assistance is free on every new Volkswagen for the first three years or 120 000 km, whichever comes first, and on active EasyDrive Maintenance Plans. Besides towing after a mechanical or electrical breakdown or an accident, the programme can arrange hotel accommodation, vehicle repatriation and safe storage, subject to its terms. Volkswagen notes that cellphone and roaming charges depend on your own tariff.

Volkswagen Group Africa, its offices and its dealers

The company behind vw.co.za is Volkswagen Group Africa (Pty) Ltd, shortened to VWGA in its legal notices, although many people still call it Volkswagen of South Africa or VWSA. Its head office is in Kariega in the Eastern Cape, and it sells Volkswagen passenger and commercial vehicles through a national dealer network, along with MasterCars certified pre-owned vehicles.

Service bookings, parts and repairs are handled by individual dealerships, which are separate businesses. For a specific dealer such as VW Richards Bay, Johannesburg or Paarl, use the dealer search on vw.co.za. Manufacturer dealer locators can show call-tracking numbers rather than a dealership’s own switchboard, so confirm the number on the dealer group’s own website before relying on it. vw.co.za also carries a page on the Takata airbag safety recall campaign.

Taking a Volkswagen complaint further

  • Start with the dealership that sold or serviced the vehicle, and ask for the service manager or dealer principal if the first contact cannot help.
  • If the dealer does not resolve it, log the complaint with the Customer Interaction Centre on 0860 434 737 or support@vwconnect.co.za, with your VIN and job card or invoice, and note the reference number.
  • Take finance or insurance disputes to Volkswagen Financial Services (0861 500 400) or Volkswagensure (0800 204 638).
