FlexiReserve is a credit facility, not a savings account, and Absa says so on its own page. That distinction drives everything else: the money you access is borrowed back, the facility is suspended if you fall behind, and Absa itself suggests a savings account if saving is your actual goal.

Official provider route

Product or service support

FlexiReserve lets you access a portion of the money you have paid into your Absa home loan over and above your required repayments. Absa states that new home loan customers get the facility automatically when the mortgage bond is registered. You transfer available funds to a linked Absa transactional account through the Banking App or Absa Online. If your transactional account is at another bank you cannot do it yourself: visit an Absa branch or call the number above.

Eligibility, account or policy requirements

The minimum transfer is R1 000 per transaction. To pay a third party you must move the funds to your transactional account first, since you cannot pay someone directly from the facility. Three rules catch people out. The available amount reduces over the term of the home loan, so that your repayments stay affordable if you draw the full amount. The funds cannot be used to cover your monthly home loan repayments, which Absa answers with a flat no. And if you miss any monthly repayment the facility is suspended until every home loan account is up to date, after which Absa reinstates it two months later, so it is not available in exactly the month you are most likely to want it.

Escalation route

For access problems or a dispute about the available amount, call the number above and get a reference. Because FlexiReserve is a credit facility it falls under the National Credit Act, so a complaint about the facility, its cost or how it was disclosed goes to the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627, which is the correct body here rather than an insurance ombud. A complaint about how the bank handled your account or a service failure goes to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 once the bank complaint process is exhausted. Joint home loan accounts have their own conditions published on the same product page, so both parties should read them before either draws funds.
