Absa fraud hotline and fraud contact number
To report fraud on an Absa account or card, use the Fraud Hotline on 0860 557 557. Absa also lists the same hotline as +27 (0) 11 501 5089, which is the number to use from outside South Africa.
The Absa fraud line is the route for reporting suspected fraud and for reporting a loss on a digital transaction. For a Digital Fraud Warranty matter, the loss can be reported through the Fraud Hotline or through the click-to-call option in the app. Absa’s Fraud Solutions team then contacts you to assess the claim.
Absa Bank Limited handles these reports through its Security Centre Fraud Hotline. Absa Bank Limited has registration number 1986/004794/06 and is a registered credit provider, NCRCP7. Its head office is at Absa Towers West, 15 Troye Street, Johannesburg.
Absa card fraud, lost cards and stolen cards
If a card is lost, stolen or you think it has been compromised, block the card straight away in the Absa Banking App. The dedicated lost or stolen card contact numbers are 011 501 5050 and the toll-free 0800 11 11 55.
After blocking the card, report suspected fraud through the Absa fraud hotline on 0860 557 557, or +27 11 501 5089 in the alternative or international format shown on the page. If you entered a wrong card PIN three times, the card locks and must be unlocked at a branch.
The 3D Secure call centre on +27 (0) 11 354 4058 is for verifying online card purchases. It is a separate contact route from the general Fraud Hotline and the lost or stolen card numbers.
Absa fraud department and phishing email
For suspicious emails that claim to come from Absa, forward the message to secmon@absa.co.za. This is the phishing-email reporting address listed on the page. Fraud reports themselves go through the Fraud Hotline on 0860 557 557.
Absa’s safety pages warn about phishing, vishing, SMiShing, SIM swap and 419 scams. If Absa suspects a fake SIM swap, it may place a temporary hold on the account.
The number 0861 462 273, which also appears on Absa’s safety page, is a credit card sales line and not a fraud number.
What to have ready when reporting fraud to Absa
Have your card or account details ready and note the dates and amounts of any transactions you do not recognise. Keep a record of reference numbers and the names of agents you speak to when dealing with the Fraud Hotline or Fraud Solutions.
Never give anyone your online PIN or password, logon details, card PIN, CVV or OTP. Absa calls these the “keys to the safe”.
This is relevant to the Absa Digital Fraud Warranty, a free warranty on all digital transactions that Absa introduced on 15 August 2019 for customers who transact responsibly. The warranty requires that you did not disclose your PIN, password, logon details, CVV or OTP.
Steps to report Absa fraud
