Alibaba publishes no telephone number for buyers anywhere in the world, and nothing at all for South Africa. Checked on 6 September 2026: the group’s corporate contact page contains zero mentions of South Africa, and the Alibaba.com buyer help centre offers a self-service knowledge base, an online chat service and one country-specific complaint portal – for Thailand. There is no African desk and no South African office to call.
What Alibaba actually gives a buyer
- Online Service for Buyer – the live chat inside the Alibaba.com help centre. This is the only direct channel to Alibaba itself
- The help centre knowledge base, covering accounts, sourcing, negotiation, orders and payment, and after-sales
- Trade Assurance – the order protection programme, and the mechanism through which a dispute against a supplier is actually decided
- The Alibaba.com app, which carries the same chat and order tools
Everything else routes to the supplier, not to Alibaba. Messaging a factory through the platform is not contacting Alibaba, and a supplier agreeing to something in chat is not Alibaba agreeing to it.
The distinction that costs South Africans money
Alibaba.com is the business-to-business wholesale platform. AliExpress is the retail one, and Alibaba Group also runs Taobao, Tmall, Lazada, Daraz and Trendyol – each with its own account, its own dispute process and its own help centre. A South African buyer who ordered on AliExpress and complains through the Alibaba.com help centre will be sent away. Check which site issued the order number before you start.
Where a South African problem really sits
- A dispute about goods must be opened inside the Trade Assurance window on the order itself. Once the window closes, Alibaba has no leverage over the supplier and neither do you.
- Import duty, VAT and a parcel held at the border are SARS Customs matters, not Alibaba ones. The clearing agent named on your waybill is the party who can act.
- A card charge you did not authorise is your bank’s dispute process, and it has its own deadline that runs separately from Alibaba’s.
Because there is no phone line, the written trail is the whole case. Keep the order number, the chat log with the supplier and the dated photographs of what arrived, in one place, before you open a dispute rather than after.
