The SAPS website records the office holder as Lt Gen Mkwanazi, spelt without the h, while the name is more commonly written Mkhwanazi. Both refer to the same office.

What this office is responsible for

• Command of SAPS operations across KwaZulu-Natal, including all police stations in the province
• Provincial crime prevention priorities and the deployment of provincial units
• Oversight of station commanders, who handle day-to-day policing in each precinct
• The provincial office is not the place to report a crime or open a case. That is done at a police station

Where to take a policing matter instead

Almost every police matter is dealt with faster at station or unit level than at the provincial commissioner office, and writing to the commissioner does not create a case number.

• Complaints about police misconduct, assault, corruption or a death in custody go to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, which is independent of the SAPS, not to the provincial commissioner
