A WhatsApp Channel is not a WhatsApp number

This is the whole answer to the question, and the difference matters.

Newzroom Afrika invites people to follow it on WhatsApp “for breaking news and in-depth analysis”, and the link it gives is a whatsapp.com/channel address. A WhatsApp Channel is a broadcast feed. The station posts into it and followers read. You cannot reply to it, and you cannot send a story tip through it.

Following a channel also does not reveal your phone number to the station, and it does not give you theirs. So there is no Newzroom Afrika WhatsApp number to save, and anyone who gives you one has not got it from the broadcaster.

If what you want is to receive their news on WhatsApp, the channel is exactly right, and you reach it from the link on newzroomafrika.tv. If what you want is to send them something, use the email addresses above.

Sending a story or a tip-off

The address for this is assignment.editors@newzroomafrika.tv. Assignment editors are the people who decide which stories get allocated to a reporter, so this is the mailbox that matters for a tip.

Do not send it to comms@, which is general enquiries, or to ads@, which is advertising. A tip sent to the wrong mailbox has to be forwarded before anyone who assigns stories sees it, and news has a short shelf life.

The station’s contact form offers the same three routes as its mailboxes: General Enquiries, Sales & Advertising, and News & Programming. It requires your first name, last name, email address and a message, and asks you to accept the terms and privacy policy.

One caution about links. When pointing followers to its Facebook page, the station uses a shortened link rather than a facebook.com address. A shortener hides where it goes, so if you meet a shortened “Newzroom Afrika” link somewhere other than their own site or verified accounts, treat it with care.

About the channel

Newzroom Afrika is a 24-hour pan-African television news channel on DStv 405, launched in 2019. It describes itself as 100% black and female owned, founded by former news anchor and entrepreneur Thabile Ngwato, with a multimedia service reaching 52 African countries.

Its coverage spans local and international news, sport, business, weather, entertainment and current affairs.

Two things follow for contacting them. First, it is an independent broadcaster, not part of the SABC or MultiChoice, even though it is carried on DStv, so a complaint about the channel goes to Newzroom Afrika rather than to your subscription provider. Second, a problem receiving DStv 405 is a DStv matter and the newsroom cannot fix it.

The Ferndale address is a working newsroom rather than a public reception, so phone before going there.
