SANAS Contact Details

SANAS is the South African National Accreditation System, the only body allowed to accredit conformity assessment in South Africa under the Accreditation for Conformity Assessment, Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act, Act 19 of 2006. SANAS does not publish a general enquiries mailbox. The feedback route on its site is a form, with a named staff member’s address printed beside it; that address is an individual’s and is not repeated here. Use the form, and send documentary evidence separately to complaints@sanas.co.za, which is the departmental address.

Complaints follow a published procedure

SANAS handles complaints and appeals under its own document P12, Handling of Complaints and Appeals. That matters if you are complaining about an accredited body rather than about SANAS: the process is a formal one with defined steps, so send dates, the accreditation number of the body concerned, and the report or certificate you are disputing. A complaint without the accreditation number usually cannot be started.

Verifying an accreditation certificate

This is what most people actually need SANAS for. The site carries an accredited-organisation search and a published step-by-step guide to verifying the accreditation status of a conformity assessment body, and it maintains a page specifically for fraudulent certificates and reports. A certificate photographed and sent to you proves nothing on its own – the accreditation number has to appear in the SANAS database, with the scope you are relying on. A body can be genuinely accredited for one test and not for the one on your certificate, and the scope is where that shows.

Two other things SANAS publishes

• Accreditation is not free. SANAS publishes accreditation-based costs and an application process on the same site, so a laboratory or inspection body can price the work before applying.
• Corruption involving SANAS or an accredited body goes to the independent whistle-blowing service at thehotline.co.za, not to the complaints mailbox.
• SANAS is also South Africa’s Good Laboratory Practice monitoring authority, a separate function from accreditation with its own register.

SANAS is moving certificates and scopes of accreditation to digital-only issue and phasing out printed versions, so a paper certificate presented in future is worth checking against the database rather than taken at face value.
