The WhatsApp number is new. When we last checked this company it published two numbers and a mailbox; it has since added a third number as a WhatsApp channel. The link behind it is correctly built in full international form, so the channel genuinely works.

Note that the three numbers are three different lines, not one number written three ways. 012 is a Pretoria landline; 066 and 063 are mobile numbers.

“Calls only” means what it says

The company labels its numbers differently from each other, and the labels matter.

066 472 7099 is marked “Calls Only”. It is a mobile number, so it looks like something you could message, but the company is telling you not to. A message sent there should not be expected to get a reply.

012 001 9951 is marked “Office Number”. This is the one for ordinary business hours.

063 408 0007 is the WhatsApp line, and is the one to use if you want to send a photograph, a document or a location.

If you want something in writing that you can refer back to, use info@tshenolopi.co.za. It is a business mailbox rather than an individual’s, so it survives whoever happens to answer.

The company publishes no operating hours for any of the three lines.

Check the PSiRA registration before you hire

This applies to every private investigator in South Africa, and it is the single most useful check you can make.

Private investigation is a regulated activity. Investigators and the businesses that employ them are required to be registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority, and PSiRA runs a free public verification tool on its digital services site where you can check a registration.

We checked tshenolopi.co.za across its pages and it publishes no PSiRA registration number. That is not by itself proof of anything, since plenty of registered businesses do not put the number on their website. But it does mean you cannot verify the registration from the website alone.

Ask for the PSiRA registration number before you pay a deposit, then check it yourself on PSiRA’s verification tool. Any legitimate investigator will give it without hesitation.

The site asks the public for donations

This is unusual enough for a private company that it is worth pointing out plainly.

Tshenolo PI’s homepage carries a “Donations” section asking people to “help us with any donations so we can keep fighting crime”, and it publishes full banking details beneath it, including an account number and branch code.

We do not reproduce any organisation’s banking details, and this page is no exception. Two things follow if you are thinking of giving.

First, this is a private company, not a registered public benefit organisation. The site publishes no NPO or PBO number. A payment to it is not a tax-deductible donation, and it does not carry the oversight that comes with registered charitable status.

Second, banking details published on a web page are exactly what gets copied and altered by other people. If you decide to pay anything, whether a donation or a fee, phone 012 001 9951 and confirm the account details verbally first. Never act on account details that arrive in an unexpected email or message, even one quoting this company’s name.

What the firm says it does

It describes itself as a 100% black-owned South African investigations company, established in 2015, handling criminal investigations, corporate investigations and missing persons.

Named services include extortion and blackmail matters, vehicle asset enquiries and fraud enquiry reports. Its published testimonials also describe camera installation work, so the offering spans investigation and security technology rather than investigation alone.

One thing an investigator cannot do: replace a police case. Several of the testimonials describe working alongside a case already opened with the police. If a crime has been committed, open the case first and get the case number. A private investigator works in addition to that, not instead of it.

Agree the scope and the fee in writing before work starts, and use the email address so you have a record of what was agreed.
