Five different companies have registered with the security regulator under a version of the name Ubuntu Security, going back to 1996. Two of those registrations are live today and three have been withdrawn – and two of the five, one live and one withdrawn, carry the exact same name. So if someone tells you they are Ubuntu Security Services, the name alone does not tell you whether they are currently registered. The registration number does. The two live registrations
- Ubuntu Security Services – PSiRA 4340990, registered 22 June 2022, certificate renewed and valid to 11 January 2027
- Ubuntu Security and Protection Services – PSiRA 4827471, registered 22 November 2024, certificate renewed and valid to 17 March 2027
The three withdrawn registrations
- Ubuntu Security Services – PSiRA 466625, registered 3 September 1998, status withdrawn
- Ubuntu Security SA – PSiRA 2370988, registered 30 June 2014, status withdrawn
- Ubuntu Security CC – PSiRA 245905, registered 17 January 1996, status withdrawn
Note the first entry in each list. Ubuntu Security Services appears twice, once live on 4340990 and once withdrawn on 466625. They are different companies that chose the same trading name almost a quarter of a century apart. A certificate photographed and sent to you proves nothing unless you read the number off it.
The one question that settles it
Ask for the PSiRA registration number in writing, then look it up. If the answer is 4340990 or 4827471 you are dealing with a currently registered provider whose certificate runs into 2027. If the answer is 466625, 2370988 or 245905, the registration behind that number has been withdrawn. If there is no number at all, you have nothing to check.
None of these companies publishes a website or a telephone number that could be verified, so no contact detail is quoted on this page. The number you are given by whoever approaches you is the only one in play, and the register is the only way to test it.
Why old names come back
A withdrawn registration does not reserve the name. When a security company closes or lets its registration lapse, nothing stops a new business registering under the same words years later – which is exactly what the 1998 and 2022 entries show. It also means an internet search for a security company by name will surface material about several unrelated businesses, some of them long gone. Search the register by number, not by reputation.
