Official Unisa NSFAS route

Two organisations are involved, and it helps to know which one to call. Unisa does not approve or reject NSFAS applications or appeals: NSFAS handles those through myNSFAS. Questions about your application, its status or an appeal go to NSFAS on 08000 67327 or info@nsfas.org.za.

Once NSFAS has confirmed your funding, Unisa’s Student Funding directorate activates your registration and claims tuition from NSFAS. Questions about that Unisa side go to Student Funding on 0800 00 1870 or enquire@unisa.ac.za. The office is at Sunnyside Campus, Hall B, E’skia Mphahlele Building. Questions about your student account balance go to Unisa’s debtors team on 012 429 2441 or finan@unisa.ac.za.

What Unisa says NSFAS covers for its students:

  • Fees: NSFAS pays registration and tuition fees directly to Unisa.
  • Learning Material Allowance: R660 per module for the first 4 modules, or R5,678 in total for 5 or more modules per year.
  • Incidental allowance: R316.70 per month for 10 months, for qualifying students registered for 10 or more modules in an academic year.
  • Not covered: historic debt, student card fees, library fines and supplementary exam fees.

What you need before contacting

Your household’s combined gross annual income must not exceed the NSFAS threshold of R350,000 per year. To apply you need a myNSFAS profile, your personal, academic and household information, and your supporting documents ready to upload.

If you are due a refund, Unisa processes refunds under R10 000 automatically. For R10 000 and above you need a refund form, a certified copy of your ID, proof of payment and proof of banking details.

Step-by-step contact process

  1. Apply on the official NSFAS website: create a myNSFAS profile, complete your personal, academic and household information, upload your supporting documents and submit before the closing date.
  2. Check your application status regularly on myNSFAS and respond to any document requests.
  3. If your application is rejected, submit an appeal through myNSFAS within 30 days, with supporting documents.
  4. Once NSFAS confirms funding, Unisa activates your registration and claims tuition from NSFAS.
  5. For Unisa-side funding queries, call 0800 00 1870 or email enquire@unisa.ac.za.

Escalation route

A rejected NSFAS application is escalated by appeal through myNSFAS within 30 days, not through Unisa. For problems on the Unisa side, Unisa does not publish a separate escalation line; use Student Funding (0800 00 1870, enquire@unisa.ac.za) or write to University of South Africa, P O Box 392, Unisa, 0003.
