There is no such thing as a Capitec ombudsman. No South African bank has its own ombudsman, because the point of an ombud is that it sits outside the bank. For Capitec, as for every other bank, the external body is the National Financial Ombud Scheme.
Official contact channels
- National Financial Ombud: 0860 800 900
- Capitec client care, which you must approach first: 0860 10 20 43, available 24 hours
- Capitec email: [email protected]
- Capitec WhatsApp: 067 418 9565, 06:00 to 22:00
- From outside South Africa: +27 21 440 3580
The order matters. The ombud will not take a complaint the bank has not had a fair chance to resolve, so lodge it with Capitec first, get a reference number, and wait for the bank final response before escalating.
Services and responsibilities
- The National Financial Ombud handles complaints about banking, credit, life insurance and short-term insurance
- It absorbed the former Ombudsman for Banking Services and the Credit Ombud, so those older names now route to it
- Its service is free to consumers
- It can make recommendations and determinations binding on a member institution
- It does not set bank fees or interest rates and cannot force a bank to grant credit
If you are searching for the Credit Ombud or the Ombudsman for Banking Services, you have not found an out-of-date page: those offices were consolidated into the National Financial Ombud, and the single number above replaces them.
Office and address information
- The ombud is an independent scheme, not a government department and not part of any bank
- Complaints are lodged in writing, with the bank reference and supporting documents
- There is normally a time limit measured from the bank final response, so do not sit on it
- Capitec is a registered bank supervised by the Prudential Authority of the Reserve Bank
- Market conduct of banks and financial services providers is regulated by the FSCA
Keep the paper trail. An ombud case is decided largely on documents, so the reference number, dates, statements and the bank written response are worth more than a recollection of a phone call.
Applications and escalation
- Step one: complain to Capitec on 0860 10 20 43 or [email protected] and get a reference
- Step two: ask for the final response if the matter is not resolved
- Step three: take it to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900
- A complaint about advice when a product was sold goes to the FAIS Ombud instead
- A complaint about a credit agreement or reckless lending can also go to the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627
- Misuse of your personal information is a POPIA matter for the Information Regulator
Pick the right forum first time. Claims handling and account disputes go to the National Financial Ombud; being sold something unsuitable goes to the FAIS Ombud; and reckless credit goes to the NCR. Sending it to the wrong one costs weeks.
