Electronic waste is not ordinary rubbish and should not go into a household bin. Producers of electrical goods are required to fund take-back and recycling, so cartridges, old printers, batteries and cables have somewhere to go that is not a landfill.

Getting rid of it properly

Most of this is easier than people assume, and free.

• Many retailers accept cartridges and batteries back at the counter.
• Municipal drop-off sites take electronic waste separately from general refuse.
• Wipe the device first. Printers, phones and computers hold scanned documents and saved credentials.
• Working equipment can be donated, which is better than recycling it.

Cartridges and warranties

Using a compatible cartridge does not by itself void a printer warranty, though damage caused by one may not be covered. A supplier may not force you to buy consumables from them as a condition of the warranty.

Buy from a seller with a physical address and a returns process, since counterfeit consumables are common online and leak or clog. Defective goods carry a six-month return right under the Consumer Protection Act. Verified 26 August 2026.
