The Gauteng Department of Education runs public schooling in the province and handles the annual online admissions cycle. The numbers below were read on gov.za on 24 August 2026.

The department’s old website, education.gpg.gov.za, no longer resolves – its content moved onto the provincial gauteng.gov.za site, which was not responding when we rechecked on 2 September 2026. Services and responsibilities
GDE administers public schools in Gauteng: admissions and placement, curriculum delivery, school funding and no-fee status, teacher appointments, and school governance oversight. It also runs the province’s online admissions system for Grade 1 and Grade 8.
The department does not publish per-school phone numbers, and neither does any other province. Schools are reached directly or through the district office. If you are trying to contact a specific school, the district covering it is the right route.
Office and address information
Day-to-day matters are handled by district offices, not head office. Gauteng is divided into fifteen education districts across Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng and the West Rand. An unplaced learner is the district’s responsibility – that is the office to press, and head office will refer you there in any case.
Applications and escalation
Applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 are made online, inside a fixed annual window. Applying late – not a shortage of space – is the most common reason a placement fails. Windows are announced by the department each year and close firmly.
Two rights are worth knowing before you phone. A learner may not be refused admission because school fees are unpaid, and results may not be withheld over a fee debt; parents who cannot afford fees apply to the school for a fee exemption, which is means-tested and set in national regulation. And corporal punishment is unlawful – an assault on a learner is a police matter and should be reported as one, not handled only through the school.
Escalate in order: the school, then the School Governing Body, then the district office, then the provincial department on the numbers above. Keep dates, names and reference numbers at each step – the next level will ask what the previous one said.
