For Government Employees Housing Scheme (GEHS) enrolment queries, call the enrolment call centre on 0861 12 34 34. General scheme queries go to gehs@dpsa.gov.za, and GEHS home loans are handled by SA Home Loans on 0860 2 4 6 8 10. The DPSA says the enrolment site is www.gehsenrolment.org and not www.gehs.gov.za. On 16 September 2026 the gehs.gov.za address did not load at all, so use the DPSA pages or the enrolment site. Neither the DPSA nor SA Home Loans publishes a GEHS WhatsApp number or a customer service line other than those above. The DPSA pages also do not explain how to download an enrolment certificate, so ask the enrolment call centre about proof of enrolment.
Services and responsibilities
The GEHS is an employee benefit scheme that gives government employees housing support. It covers staff in national and provincial departments and related public institutions, and the state runs it alongside the Government Employees Pension Fund and the Government Employees Medical Scheme. Its services cover the housing allowance, employee enrolment, education and advice, access to affordable housing finance, rental housing support and the delivery of houses.
Every employee must enrol first to use any GEHS service, including the housing allowance. According to the enrolment FAQs, all public service employees in national and provincial departments qualify, enrolment is free, homeowners must also enrol, and employees on communal land with valid permission to occupy enrol in the same way.
Your department’s HR division handles the housing allowance. Homeowners who submit proof of ownership (a title deed or permission to occupy certificate) receive the allowance directly. For employees who do not own a home, some or all of it is saved in the Individual Linked Savings Facility until they buy. Where both spouses work in the public service, only one of them receives the allowance. The DPSA page still quotes the July 2015 amount of R1 200 a month and says it is adjusted for inflation each July, so ask HR for the current figure.
SA Home Loans is the scheme’s home finance partner, working with the DPSA, the Public Investment Corporation and the GEPF. It describes the GEHS Mortgage Loan as a loan of up to 100% of the purchase price over up to 30 years, depending on affordability. The GEHS Housing Access Loan goes up to R350 000 over up to 7 years to buy, build or improve a home, on land with or without a title deed. Both carry discounted rates for employees who repay by salary stop order.
Office/address information
The DPSA GEHS pages list no walk-in GEHS office or office hours. The scheme works through the call centre, the email address and the online enrolment site, while allowance paperwork goes through departmental HR offices. SA Home Loans lists its branches on the branches page of sahomeloans.com and warns that it never asks for fees to be paid upfront. It tells clients to check branch and consultant details on its official website.
Applications and escalation
- Enrol on www.gehsenrolment.org, or call 0861 12 34 34 if enrolment fails.
- Give your department’s HR division your proof of ownership or rental so the housing allowance can be processed.
- If a scheme matter stays unresolved, email gehs@dpsa.gov.za with your department’s name and copies of your earlier correspondence.
- Report fraud or corruption involving housing benefits to the National Anti-Corruption Hotline on 0800 701 701, published by the Public Service Commission.
