GPAA and GEPF share one number
These two are constantly confused, and the numbering does not help.
The GEPF is the Government Employees Pension Fund, the fund your money sits in. The GPAA, the Government Pensions Administration Agency, is the body that administers it.
They publish the same toll-free number, 0800 117 669. GEPF writes it in international form as +27 80 011 7669, which is the identical number.
Where they differ is email. GPAA uses enquiries@gpaa.gov.za and GEPF uses enquiries@gepf.co.za. Note the domains: one is gov.za, the other co.za. Both are correct for their own organisation.
For a benefit, a claim or a statement, the number is the same whichever name you had in mind.
GPAA administers more than the GEPF
If your pension is not a GEPF one, GPAA may still be the right place.
Alongside the GEPF, GPAA administers a set of funds and benefits on behalf of National Treasury: Special Pensions, Military Pensions, Injury on Duty, the Medical Subsidy, the Associated Institutions Pension Fund and the Temporary Employees Pension Fund.
GPAA has also been appointed by the Department of Military Veterans as the administrator for the Military Veterans Pension benefit, made under section 24(1) of the Military Veterans Act, 2011.
Military Pensions and Military Veterans Pensions are two different things on GPAA’s own list, so say which one you mean when you call.
On the GEPF side, benefits are split by event
GPAA groups GEPF benefits into five categories, and naming the right one shortens the call.
- Resignation benefits
- Retirement benefits
- Death benefits
- Funeral benefits
- Transfer to an approved fund
GPAA also runs member outreach, including roadshows, mobile offices and HR forums. If you are far from Pretoria, ask on 0800 117 669 whether a mobile office is due in your area, because that can save a trip.
The fraud hotline, and why its address looks odd

The hotline mailbox is on thehotline.co.za, not on a government domain, which reasonably makes people suspicious.
It is legitimate. This is an independently run ethics line used by a number of South African institutions, and the point of it is precisely that reports do not travel through the organisation being reported on. PSiRA uses the same service, and the same SMS line, 30916.
Use the hotline for suspected fraud involving pensions or GPAA staff. Use 0800 117 669 for an ordinary benefit query. Pension fraud, particularly around death and funeral benefits, is common enough that the separate channel exists for a reason.
Visiting or writing to GPAA
The offices are at 34 Hamilton Street in Arcadia, Pretoria, which is the administrative quarter east of the city centre.
Post goes to a different address: GPAA, Private Bag X63, Pretoria, 0001. Do not post documents to the Hamilton Street address, and do not assume the two are interchangeable.
GPAA still publishes a fax number, 012 326 2507, which is unusual in 2026 but may suit submitting a signed form. Confirm on the toll-free line that it is still monitored before relying on it.
Before you call
Have your pension or persal number, your identity number and the name of your employer department ready.
If you are claiming a death or funeral benefit, have the deceased member’s details and the death certificate to hand as well.
One note on the website: gpaa.gov.za is an older site and several obvious addresses return errors, including the one you would guess for contact. The working contact page is at gpaa.gov.za/contact.html.
