Graaff-Reinet falls under the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality, and traffic and law enforcement there sit inside the municipality’s Protection Services rather than in a separately contactable traffic department. The municipality publishes no direct daytime traffic number: the switchboard is the route in.
Note the domain. The old beyersnaudemun.gov.za address is dead. The live municipal site is bnlm.gov.za, and the contacts below come from it.
Municipal numbers, office hours
- Switchboard, all departments: 049 807 5700
- Customer Care call centre: 049 807 5904
- Municipal Manager’s Office: 049 807 5778, [email protected]
- Mayor’s Office: 049 807 5728, [email protected]
The municipality also lists mailboxes for the switchboard and the call centre, but both are a named official’s personal work address rather than a departmental one, so they are not reproduced here. Ask for the address you need when you phone, or write to the Municipal Manager’s Office.
Graaff-Reinet after-hours emergency numbers
- Protection Services: 076 427 7153 or 084 532 5284
- Fire Services: 084 256 1536 or 060 425 0113
- Water and Sanitation: 078 151 4587
- Electrical Services: 083 873 3155
These are standby mobiles carried by officials on duty and the municipality lists them under Emergency / After Hours. They are for an emergency outside office hours, not for a licence renewal, a fine query or a general enquiry — those belong on the switchboard during the day.
What Protection Services actually covers
- Traffic policing and law enforcement on municipal roads.
- By-law enforcement.
- Incidents needing a municipal officer after hours.
- A criminal matter is still 10111 for SAPS, not the municipality. From a mobile, 112 reaches an emergency operator.
Licences, discs and fines
Driving licence renewals, learner’s licence bookings, vehicle registration and licence disc renewals are handled at the licensing office rather than by Protection Services, and the switchboard will transfer you. Fines issued in the municipality are paid to the issuing authority named on the notice — check the notice, because a fine issued on a national road through the district may be a provincial or national matter, not a municipal one.
One thing to be careful of on the municipal contacts page
The municipality’s own contacts page carries two entries that are plainly not phone numbers — a string of zeros against Nieu-Bethesda and an eighteen-digit string against Rietbron. They appear to be placeholders that were never filled in. They are not reproduced here and dialling them will get you nowhere; use the switchboard for those towns instead.
Writing to the municipality
Correspondence should be addressed to The Municipal Manager, Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality, P O Box 71, Graaff-Reinet, 6280. Put anything you want on record in writing, keep a copy, and ask for a reference number when you phone.
