There is no single national maintenance court number. Maintenance is a service of your local magistrate’s court, so the number you need is that court’s. Bloemfontein is the main seat for the Mangaung magisterial district. Two other courts in that district also handle maintenance: Dewetsdorp on 051 541 0021 and Wepener on 051 583 1806.

Every court in the table lists maintenance among its services. Ask for the maintenance section when you get through: the main number is a switchboard covering criminal, civil, children’s court and maintenance work.

Finding the right court

Maintenance is heard by the court for the district where you live, so the court you want is not necessarily the biggest one nearby. The Department of Justice publishes two tools for this on justice.gov.za:

• A per-province area finder that maps a suburb or town to its magisterial district and the courts that serve it.
• The full lower courts list, downloadable as a spreadsheet. The version we used is dated 21 July 2026 and covers more than 520 courts, with each one’s telephone number, postal and street address, GPS coordinates and the services it offers.

The department also keeps an operational notices page listing courts whose telephones, power or systems are down, with temporary numbers. If a court’s line rings unanswered for days, check there before assuming the number is wrong.

Maintenance orders can now be dealt with through the department’s online services system, and queries about that system go to the DojDEOnlineSupport address above rather than to a court switchboard.

Before you go to court

• Phone first and ask which days the maintenance section takes new applications, and what time it stops taking them.
• Take your ID, the children’s birth certificates, proof of your income and expenses, and whatever you know about the other party’s income and address.
• Take any existing order or agreement with you, and the case number if there is one.
• Ask for the maintenance investigator’s details if payments have stopped; that is a different process from a new application.
• Keep proof of every payment made or missed. It is the evidence the court works from.
