Microsoft does not phone you about a virus on your computer, and a pop-up warning with a telephone number on it is fake. Real security software does not ask you to call anybody. That single fact prevents most of the losses in this category.

How the scam runs

It is the same sequence every time, and it depends entirely on you granting access.

• Never install remote access software because a caller asked you to. That hands them the machine and everything signed into it.
• Nobody legitimate is ever paid in gift cards, vouchers or cryptocurrency.
• A refund that requires you to log into your banking to receive it is the theft, not the refund.
• Hang up and dial the company yourself using a number from its own website.

If you already let them in

Disconnect the machine from the internet, then change your passwords from a different device, starting with email and banking. Remove any remote access software they installed, and enable two-factor authentication where you can.

Phone your bank immediately if money moved, and report it to the police. Recovery is sometimes possible in the first hours and rarely afterwards. Verified 26 August 2026.
