The Motor Industry Ombudsman of South Africa, MIOSA, answers on 010 590 8378. Email enquiries go to info@miosa.co.za. The office is open Monday to Thursday 08:30 to 16:30 and Friday 08:30 to 16:00. We read this on miosa.co.za on 24 September 2026.

That single geographic number is the whole of MIOSA’s published telephone contact. If you have been given an 0861 share-call number for the motor ombudsman, it is not on MIOSA’s website today.

MIOSA has warned about a WhatsApp impersonation scam

Read this before you act on any message claiming to come from the motor ombudsman.

MIOSA has published an urgent public notice about people falsely claiming to be MIOSA employees or representatives, contacting consumers on WhatsApp and asking for money to help with a motor industry complaint. MIOSA calls the conduct fraudulent and unlawful.

The notice states plainly that MIOSA does not request payment for complaints or dispute resolution services, and does not demand payment from consumers for lodging or processing a complaint.

If someone contacts you claiming to represent MIOSA and asks for a payment, MIOSA asks you to do four things:

  • Do not make any payment
  • Do not share personal or banking information
  • Take screenshots of the communication, making sure the phone number is visible
  • Report it immediately to reportfraud@miosa.co.za

That mailbox exists only for this. Ordinary complaints and enquiries go to info@miosa.co.za or through the assistance request form instead.

Free to consumers, with one exception

MIOSA states that its services are free of charge to the consumer, except where an on-site automotive product inspection is required.

Keep the two apart. Lodging a complaint costs nothing, and nobody from MIOSA will phone or message you asking to be paid to open or progress one. A physical inspection of a vehicle or product is the only thing MIOSA says can carry a cost.

If a charge is ever raised with you, it should come through MIOSA’s own case process after your complaint is already running, never as an upfront request from a stranger on WhatsApp.

Lodging a complaint

Complaints are lodged on an Assistance Request Form at newcomplaints.miosa.co.za. MIOSA investigates and makes a recommendation based on the facts and the applicable law.

MIOSA warns that the form must be completed in full, and that failing to do so causes unnecessary delays. Fill in every field before submitting rather than sending a partial form and following up.

For help completing the form, or to check progress on a complaint already lodged, call the Information and Liaison Office on 010 590 8378. That is the same number as the main switchboard.

MIOSA describes itself as the only accredited ombudsman for the automotive industry, working under the South African Automotive Industry Code of Conduct.

Businesses registering with MIOSA

Motor dealers, workshops and related businesses register and update their details at register.miosa.co.za, which is a separate system from the consumer complaint form.

Use the same number, 010 590 8378, if the registration system gives trouble.

If MIOSA is not the right ombud

MIOSA handles disputes between consumers and the automotive industry. If your complaint sits elsewhere, MIOSA publishes these on its own contact page.

A dispute about the finance agreement on a vehicle may belong with the Credit Ombud or the National Financial Ombud rather than MIOSA, even though the vehicle came from a dealer. Call 010 590 8378 and ask if you are unsure which scheme applies.
