Every ombud expects you to complain to the organisation itself first. The Public Protector calls itself a “complaints body of last resort”. Before you go to it, try to resolve the problem with the officials involved. If that fails, write to the person in charge, such as the head of department, chief executive or municipal manager.

Ombudsman complaint tips

  • Keep copies of every complaint you made to the organisation and the reference numbers it gave you.
  • Send the complaint to the ombud that covers that organisation. The Public Protector does not handle private-company disputes.
  • Use the email address or number on the ombud’s own website, and never pay a fee to lodge a complaint.
