The National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa is the single ombud that replaced several older schemes covering banking, credit, life insurance and short term insurance. Banks and insurers routinely print its number on their own pages, and some of those printings are out of date.

What this regulator handles

The scheme covers banks, credit providers, short term or non life insurers, and long term or life insurers. That breadth is the point of the merger: a consumer no longer has to work out which of several ombuds a complaint belongs to before lodging it.

Complaints and escalation process

The ombud publishes an online complaint form, a complaints process flowchart, an application for assistance, and a facility to track a complaint already lodged. It expects the financial institution to have been given a chance to resolve the matter first, so lodge with the bank or insurer before coming here.
