Painting safely

Most paint problems come from ventilation and preparation rather than the paint itself.

• Ventilate continuously, especially with solvent-based products, and take breaks in fresh air. Headache or dizziness means stop and get outside.
• Keep children and pregnant women out of the area during work and while it cures.
• Read the label for the right product: exterior, interior, damp-prone areas and metal all need different systems, and preparation is most of the result.
• Never decant into an unlabelled container, and store away from heat, food and children.

Disposal, and getting it wrong

Leftover paint, solvents and cleaning thinners are hazardous waste, not household refuse. Do not pour them down a drain or into a storm-water inlet, which leads straight to a river. Ask the municipality where hazardous household waste is accepted.
