Traffic and licensing in Krugersdorp is run by Mogale City Local Municipality, and the single most important thing to know is that you probably cannot walk in. Since 1 January 2020 all driving licence applications are done online, and walk-ins are accepted only from applicants aged 60 and over.
Driving Licence Testing Centre
- Telephone: 011 951 2187, 011 668 0598 or 011 668 0689
- All bookings through online.natis.gov.za
- Walk-ins: only for applicants 60 and older, with dedicated help on Wednesdays only
A booking must be confirmed before the expiry date on your booking confirmation. If it lapses you start again, so make the booking early rather than close to your licence expiry.
Vehicle Testing Station
- Telephone: 011 951 2187 or 011 951 2183
- Address: corner Miller and Carter Street, Delporton, Krugersdorp
- Hours: 07:45 to 14:45 on weekdays, and 09:00 to 14:45 on the second Tuesday of each month
That closing time is early. Quarter to three is the door shutting, not the last test starting, so arriving after lunch on a busy day is a wasted trip.
Municipal numbers
- Call centre: 0861 664 253, [email protected], 07:30 to 16:00 Monday to Friday
- WhatsApp line: 083 787 2814
- Switchboard: 011 951 2000
- Emergency services: 010 345 1405 or 011 564 2210. Police: 011 951 1153
Mogale City also publishes the personal mobile numbers and individual work mailboxes of several licensing officials. Those are people, not desks, so they are not repeated here — use the numbers above and ask to be put through.
Checking whether your licence card has arrived
Do not phone for this. Register a profile on online.natis.gov.za, log in, and look at the Dashboard under Licensing Information Summary. When the Licence Status reads Received by NaTIS, the card is at the centre and ready for collection. Driving there before that status changes is how people lose a morning.
Proof of address is now compulsory
Regulation 32A of the National Road Traffic Regulations requires proof of residence for any NaTIS transaction. A utility account, bank statement, municipal rates invoice, phone account, SARS correspondence or retail statement all work, and must be less than three months old. A signed lease is valid for the term of the lease. If you live in an informal settlement or a rural area, a date-stamped letter from the ward councillor or the local traditional authority confirming your address is accepted — that is a specific provision worth knowing about.
Fees and forms
- Motor vehicle registration: R192.00 as published by the municipality. Licence fees are set nationally and change, so confirm on the day.
- All licensing forms download from enatis.com rather than from the municipal site.
- A change of ownership needs a roadworthy certificate, and the seller signs the notification as well as the buyer.
What the counter will not do
Mogale City states that no information about a vehicle, an owner or a licence holder is released without a completed official application form for that specific transaction, submitted in person with acceptable identification. So you cannot phone to find out who owns a car, and nobody legitimate will offer to look it up for you. Bring a copy of your ID for every service.
