The Southern African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) is a non-profit organisation that helps consumers and its member institutions prevent fraud and identity theft. The contact details below were read from the SAFPS contact page on 2 September 2026.

Official contact channels

The contact centre and head office share the same number, so there is only one line to remember. It is a Johannesburg geographic number charged as a normal call – SAFPS publishes no toll-free line.

What this regulator handles

SAFPS invites contact for a specific set of things, which is a useful filter before you call:

Protective Registration is the reason most people should know this number. It flags your identity number on the SAFPS database so that member institutions – banks, lenders and retailers – apply extra verification before opening credit in your name. If your ID has been lost or stolen, or you believe your identity has been used, that flag is the practical defence.

SAFPS is a non-profit and applies for consumers at no charge. Anyone demanding payment to place a protective flag on your identity is not SAFPS.

Complaints and escalation process

Report the loss or suspected misuse to SAFPS, and separately open a case with the South African Police Service – you will usually need the case number when disputing fraudulent accounts with a bank or lender.

Dispute the fraudulent account with the institution that opened it as well. SAFPS flags your identity going forward; it does not remove an account already opened, which only the credit provider and the bureaux can do.

SAFPS is registered with the National Credit Regulator under NCRCB20. Under the National Credit Act a credit bureau must investigate a disputed listing free of charge, so an unresolved credit-record dispute goes to the National Credit Regulator or the Credit Ombud. Misuse of your personal information can also be reported to the Information Regulator under POPIA.

Address and operating information

SAFPS does not publish a street address or contact centre operating hours on its contact page. Contact runs through the single telephone number, the email address and the enquiry form, which lets you pick a subject – membership, Protective Registration for lost or stolen documents, victim of fraud, or fraud prevention.

Members log in through separate member and CIT portals, which are not consumer routes.
