WCED head office
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Street address | 1 North Wharf Square, 2 Lower Loop Street, Foreshore, Cape Town, 8001 |
| Postal address | Private Bag X9114, Cape Town, 8000 |
| Switchboard | 0861 819 919 |
| 084 025 9919 | |
| Walk-in centre | Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 15:45 |
The walk-in centre closes at 15:45, not at 16:00 or 17:00. If you are travelling in to hand something over, that quarter of an hour matters.
The private bag is published under the districts branch rather than on the contact page, so it is easy to miss when you are looking for somewhere to post a document.
The only email on the contact page is the media office
Worth knowing before you write in and wait.
The single email address the WCED publishes under “Contact Us” is a media mailbox. It is the right address for a journalist and the wrong one for a parent chasing an admission or a teacher chasing a payslip.
For an ordinary query, use the switchboard or the WhatsApp line instead, or go directly to your education district, which is where school-level matters are actually handled.
Specialist call centres
| Line | Number |
|---|---|
| Safe Schools | 0800 45 46 47 |
| Employee Wellness | 0800 111 011 |
Safe Schools is the line for bullying, violence, drugs and anything threatening a learner’s safety. Employee Wellness is for departmental staff, not for the public.
The old WCED Online address now redirects
If you have the old address bookmarked, it still works, but it no longer goes where it used to.
The wcedonline address now redirects to the education section of the provincial government site. The department’s pages all live under that site now, so a search result pointing at the old domain will land you in the right place.
Education district offices
Most queries belong at a district, not at head office.

Two districts share one Paarl number
This one will send you to the wrong office if you are not expecting it.
The West Coast district head office is at 6 Hospital Street, Paarl, on 021 860 1200. The Cape Winelands district’s Paarl satellite office is published at the same street address on the same number.
So dialling 021 860 1200 does not tell you which district you have reached. Say which district you need when the call is answered, and say the school’s name, because the two districts cover different schools from the same building.
One other thing to expect: the Cape Winelands director post is published as vacant. Queries there are being handled in an acting capacity, so ask for the office rather than a post holder.
What we are not publishing
The districts page names every director, personal assistant and circuit manager and gives each one a personal work mailbox in the form of their own name. We do not republish those.
The switchboard numbers above reach the same offices, and they keep working when people move on. Several of the posts on that page are already marked acting or vacant, which is the point.
