Check first that you want this Hofmeyr. Dr Louis Hofmeyr, who practises as Dr LM Hofmeyr, is an ear, nose and throat surgeon in Cape Town who subspecialises in otology and neurotology. There is a separate and well-known Dr Lou Hofmeyr who is a cardiologist at Mediclinic Panorama. Different person, different rooms, different number, and the two are confused constantly.

Dr LM Hofmeyr rooms

The practice also publishes a cellphone number alongside the rooms line on its own contact page. It is not reproduced here; phone the rooms number first, which is the one staffed during those hours.

Accounts is a separate line

Billing, medical aid claims and statements go to the accounts line, not to the rooms. That split is worth using: an accounts query on the appointments line takes a message, while the accounts line can answer it.

The Pretoria practice has closed

Dr Hofmeyr previously ran a second practice in Pretoria and has consolidated into Cape Town, publishing a notice of that closure on his own site. If you are holding an old Pretoria number or address for him, it will not reach him. He entered full-time private practice after leaving the South African National Defence Force in 2012.

What this practice treats

This is a subspecialist ear practice rather than a general ENT one, which matters when you decide whether to ask for a referral here. The published interests are vestibular schwannoma, also called acoustic neuroma, cochlear implantation, vertigo, superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome, implantable hearing solutions, chronic ear disease, hearing loss, tinnitus, Bell palsy and sclerosteosis.

The site also publishes patient information on the vestibular examination and how to prepare for it, surgical instructions, questionnaires, tinnitus management, vestibular rehabilitation, mime therapy and the MRI follow-up protocols for vestibular schwannoma both in the observation group and after surgery. Read the preparation page before a vestibular examination; it changes what you should and should not take beforehand.

Before the appointment

Checking any specialist

Every practising doctor in South Africa is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, and you can confirm a registration and its category on the HPCSA register. That is also the body that takes a complaint about a practitioner conduct, separately from a complaint to the practice or the hospital.
