Lancet Laboratories is one of South Africa’s large private pathology groups. It runs one national number and one service mailbox, and every depot and drawing station in the country routes through them.
Lancet Laboratories contact details
- Telephone: 0861 LANCET, which dials as 0861 526 238
- Email: service@lancet.co.za
- Address: 4 Cedar Street, Richmond, Johannesburg 2092
Lancet also runs a lab locator on lancet.co.za for finding the nearest collection point, a mobile app, and an online results portal for patients. Doctors use a separate system, Path Portal, which is not the patient route.
Getting a result
- Results go to the referring doctor first. Lancet releases them to the doctor and the doctor releases them to you, which is why a result can exist before you can see it.
- Patients can register for online result access on lancet.co.za or through the Lancet Lab mobile app.
- Quote the episode or lab number from the collection slip rather than your name. Names are not unique in a national lab system and the number is what finds the sample.
Accounts and medical aid
Lancet runs a separate accounts department, listed on its site under Our Services, for billing queries, statements and medical aid shortfalls. Sending a billing question to service@lancet.co.za will get it forwarded, but going directly to accounts is faster. If your medical aid has paid short, ask for the tariff code that was billed — that single number resolves most shortfall disputes without a phone call.
What Lancet actually tests
The group runs allergy, analytical chemistry, chemistry, coagulation, cytogenetics, cytology, haematology, histology, microbiology, molecular pathology, a TB laboratory, virology and veterinary pathology, plus occupational health services and insurance testing. It also offers parentage testing and HPV and colorectal self-collection kits at listed sites. Lancet is part of Cerba Lancet Africa, which is why some correspondence carries that name rather than Lancet’s.
Before you go for a test
- Take the referral form. Lancet cannot run a test that a practitioner has not requested, except for the self-collection kits and a short list of patient-requested tests.
- Ask whether the test needs fasting. Turning up unprepared for a glucose or lipid panel means a second trip.
- Semen analysis has its own preparation guidelines published on lancet.co.za; read them before booking, because the sample is rejected otherwise.
