Netcare 911 answers medical emergencies on 082 911, around the clock. Do not use the customer service number for an emergency: it is a weekday office-hours line. Netcare also publishes a separate crisis number for mental health through its Akeso division.

What this organisation provides
Netcare 911 is the emergency medical services division of Netcare, running a national emergency operations centre in Johannesburg that takes the call, guides the caller and dispatches help. The Netcare app geolocates you in an emergency wherever you are and lets you track the responding ambulance. Netcare also operates hospitals, the Medicross primary care network and the Akeso mental health facilities, which is why the group publishes more than one emergency route.

The emergency line runs 24 hours a day. The customer service centre is different: it operates on weekdays only, between 08:00 and 16:00, and handles enquiries, compliments and complaints rather than emergencies. Support and escalation routes
One thing to know before you call: Netcare 911 is a private emergency service, and Netcare states that medical aid or private rates apply. If you have no medical scheme cover, the public emergency medical service is reached on 10177, or on 112 from a mobile phone, and those are free at the point of use. In a life threatening emergency call the number you can reach fastest rather than deliberating over billing. Complaints about care go to the customer service centre, and if unresolved, the Office of Health Standards Compliance and its Health Ombud handle complaints about the standard of care in health establishments.
