Using a ladder properly

Most ladder falls come from a few repeated mistakes.

• Overreaching. Keep your belt buckle between the stiles and move the ladder instead.
• Poor footing. Set it at roughly one out for every four up, on firm level ground, and secure or foot it.
• Climbing with full hands. Keep three points of contact and hoist tools separately.
• Wrong equipment. A ladder is for access and short tasks; sustained work needs a platform or scaffold.

Employer duties

Work at height is regulated, and above defined heights a fall protection plan, suitable equipment and trained workers are required. Protective equipment is the employer’s expense and may not be deducted from wages, and scaffolding must be erected and inspected by competent people.
