Black Rock is two mines, not one
If you have been told to report to Gloria or to Nchwaning and cannot find either on a map of Black Rock, this is why.
ARM describes the manganese operations as Gloria and Nchwaning, collectively Black Rock Mine. They are two separate mines run as one operation, which is why one telephone number covers the lot.
So “Black Rock”, “Nchwaning” and “Gloria” can all refer to the same employer and the same switchboard on 053 751 5555. Ask which of the two shafts you need when you call.
Assmang’s own website is offline
Anyone searching for Assmang directly will hit a dead end, and it is not your connection.
On 24 September 2026, assmang.co.za returned a server error carrying a “Website Under Construction” notice. The page itself says that while the new website is being completed, some company information is available at arm.co.za.
That is Assmang’s own instruction, so arm.co.za is the right place to look. There is no separate Black Rock Mine website either.
Treat any other site presenting itself as Assmang’s, particularly one advertising jobs at Black Rock, with real caution while the official site is down. Mining recruitment scams trade on exactly this kind of gap.
Who owns Assmang
Assmang is a fifty-fifty joint venture. ARM Ferrous, wholly owned by African Rainbow Minerals, holds 50%, and Assore Limited holds the other 50%.
That matters when Black Rock itself cannot help you, because there are two corporate offices you can go to rather than one.

ARM’s general mailbox is ir.admin@arm.co.za and its fax is 011 779 1312, with post to PO Box 786136, Sandton, 2146. Assore takes email at enquiries@assore.com. Both are corporate head offices, so a question about a specific shift or a site gate is still one for 053 751 5555.

All three Northern Cape mines share the 053 dialling code, so check the last seven digits carefully. Khumani and Beeshoek are iron ore and have nothing to do with Black Rock’s manganese beyond the shared owner.
Where the ore goes
ARM states that Black Rock’s manganese ore is supplied locally to the Assmang-owned smelters at Machadodorp and Cato Ridge, but is mainly exported through Port Elizabeth, as well as Durban and Richards Bay.
For a logistics or delivery query, that tells you which end of the chain to phone. A question about a rail load or an export consignment may belong with Cato Ridge or a port operation rather than with the mine.
Before you call
Black Rock is a working mine roughly 80km from the nearest town of any size, so the switchboard is not a walk-in reception. Say at the start of the call which of the two mines, Gloria or Nchwaning, your business concerns, and whether you are a supplier, a contractor, a job applicant or a neighbour with a community matter.
For anything corporate, such as procurement registration or an investor query, start with ARM on 011 779 1300 rather than the mine.
