What Richards Bay Minerals does
RBM mines coastal sand dunes in northern KwaZulu-Natal and produces mainly zircon, rutile, iron and slag. It has been operating since 1976. It runs 4 mines in the Zulti North lease area, a mineral separation plant and a smelter. Rio Tinto has lifted the suspension on the Zulti South project, with a $473m investment to extend mine life to 2050.
RBM is a joint venture. Rio Tinto owns 74%, and Blue Horizon owns 24%. Blue Horizon is an investor consortium that includes the host communities of Mbonambi, Sokhulu, Mkhwanazi and Dube. An employee trust holds the rest.
RBM says it has rehabilitated more than 3,600 hectares of mined dunes with native plants. Cultural artefacts found in its mining areas are housed at the Mananga Heritage Centre in KwaMbonambi and the KwaSokhulu Heritage Centre.
