Before signing an alarm contract

The contract, not the sales visit, is what you are buying.

• Ask for the PSIRA registration number of the company and verify it. Every security provider must be registered.
• Check the contract term and the escalation clause. Long lock-in periods with annual increases are common and enforceable.
• Ask what the response time actually is, and what happens outside the coverage area.
• Ask who owns the equipment at the end of the term, and what removal costs.
• Ask about false alarm charges, which accumulate quietly.

What armed response is not

It buys a vehicle attending your alarm within a stated time, not an investigation or an arrest. A crime must still be reported to the police for a case number, and insurers require that number.
