For an MTN contract, the post-paid customer care number is 808 from an MTN phone, while callers using a non-MTN phone can dial 083 135. MTN says calls to 808 are free from MTN numbers. For complaints, MTN publishes complaints@mtn.com, and fraud can be reported to Fraudhelp@mtn.com. MTN does not publish a general customer care email address. For MTN contract customers, 808 is the post-paid customer care route listed in MTN’s customer service charter. The same charter gives 135 for pre-paid customers. If you are calling from another network, MTN’s Contact us page gives 083 135 as the number to use.

MTN’s charter says call centre calls are answered within 3 minutes and that assistance is available in several languages. Customers with a disability can use alternative channels, including direct messages on social media for hearing-impaired customers.

MTN’s physical address is MTN Proprietary Limited, Innovation Centre, 216 14th Avenue, Fairland, Johannesburg. Its postal address is Private Bag 9955, Cresta, 2118.

MTN contract complaints

For a complaint about an MTN contract, start with 808 or the other official MTN channels. MTN’s Contact us page says that if you have not received feedback, or 14 days have passed since you last heard from MTN, you should contact its Complaints Management team at complaints@mtn.com.

MTN says it has not subscribed to Hello Peter or other external consumer forums since 1 August 2020. It asks customers to use its official channels so that personal information can be handled in line with POPIA.

Billing disputes on an MTN contract

MTN’s charter says complaints must first be lodged with MTN. It confirms receipt within 48 hours with a reference number by phone, SMS or email, and aims to resolve complaints within 14 days.

If the complaint is about an MTN contract bill, you must still pay the subscription and any charges that are not disputed. Until the complaint is resolved, MTN says it will not suspend your service, send the account to a collection agency, or charge penalties or interest on the disputed amount.

The charter also allows a pro-rated rebate for contracted services that you paid for but did not receive when MTN’s network availability falls below 95% averaged over 6 months. MTN says affected customers are notified by SMS and on its website at least 7 days before planned upgrades that interrupt service.

What MTN must tell you about your contract

When you sign an MTN contract, the customer service charter lists information MTN must give you where it applies:

  • any deposit, connection fee and administrative fees;
  • insurance and hardware costs;
  • in-bundle and out-of-bundle rates, and whether tariffs may change during the contract;
  • the rules for ending the contract early;
  • carry-over rules for voice minutes and data, and fair usage policies;
  • the date and period of invoicing.

For promotions, MTN must give the terms and conditions, eligibility, fair usage policy, duration, your obligations when the promotion ends and all fees.

Itemised bills for MTN contract customers

MTN provides a post-paid itemised bill on request. The itemised bill shows in-bundle calls, SMSs and data sessions at “0 cents”, as well as charged calls, SMSs and out-of-bundle data. For charged usage, it includes the date, time, duration or data used, recipient number and cost.

The bill also lists any additional charges and the billing period’s start and end dates. MTN’s charter says contract customers can get this information online or ask for it at an MTN store or through the call centre. MTN may recover its costs for retrieving itemised billing.

MTN contract customer rights

MTN’s customer service charter lists rights that apply to its customers. These include the right to receive the required service, choose a provider, get information in your own language, access records MTN holds about you, and have your personal data protected and not sold without permission.

The charter also lists the right to port your number, subject to regulations, and the right to complain and seek redress. If you activate international roaming on an MTN contract, MTN sends the terms by SMS together with call centre details and roaming rates.
