One caution about the reservations landline
The lodge’s own website prints its reservations landline two different ways on two different pages. One gives the middle three digits as 516, the other as 576. Both otherwise read as 011 xxx 4367. We are not going to guess which is current, because a directory that picks one and states it confidently is exactly how a wrong number spreads.
Use 014 734 7000, the lodge itself, or email [email protected]. Both appear consistently and neither depends on resolving the discrepancy. If you do want the reservations landline, ask for it when you call the lodge.
The lodge does not take its own bookings
Reservations for Mabula sit with Extraordinary Reservations, a separate booking office, rather than with the lodge’s front desk. That split decides who you should be speaking to.
- New bookings, dates, rates and cancellations go to the reservations office. The lodge cannot always see or change a booking held on the central system.
- Anything on the ground goes to 014 734 7000: a late arrival, a gate query, dietary requirements, a game drive time, or something left behind in a room.
- The spa keeps its own mailbox, [email protected], so treatment bookings are best arranged there rather than through reservations.
- The email domain will not match the lodge’s name, and that is expected here rather than a warning sign. Extraordinary is the booking company, so [email protected] is the correct address.
Getting there
- Roughly two hours from Johannesburg, in the Waterberg, with the final approach about 47km out from Bela-Bela.
- The last stretch is reserve road, not public tar. Confirm the gate you should use and the latest arrival time when you book, because gates on private reserves close and there is no through route once they do.
- The Waterberg is a malaria free area, which is a large part of why families choose it over lowveld reserves. Confirm current guidance with the lodge or a travel clinic rather than relying on a directory.
- There is a landing strip for guests flying in privately. Arrange it in advance through reservations, not on arrival.
Booking and deposits
Confirm banking details by phone on 014 734 7000 before paying any deposit. Where a booking office and a lodge are separate companies, an invoice arriving from an unfamiliar domain looks entirely normal, which is precisely the gap invoice fraud exploits. Verify by voice.
Where you book decides who resolves a problem. Through a platform, the platform holds the money and runs the dispute. Direct, the reservations office does. Either way, get the cancellation terms in writing when you book.
Under the Consumer Protection Act you may cancel an advance booking, and a reasonable cancellation fee may be charged rather than the full amount kept. Cancellation caused by death or hospitalisation cannot be charged for. If it is not resolved, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud is on 0860 000 272.
