Postbank is South African Postbank SOC Limited, an authorised financial services provider, FSP number 53760.
Two toll free customer care numbers, not one
Postbank prints both 0800 53 54 55 and 0800 53 33 50 under Customer Care, with no distinction between them. If one is engaged, try the other. Both are 0800 numbers, so neither costs you anything to call.
Postbank lists these as the route for statements, withdrawal requests, account enquiries and updates.
One formatting oddity worth knowing. The SASSA enquiry number is printed on Postbank’s site as “080 060 10 11”, spaced in a way that does not look like a normal South African number. It is the ten digits 0800 60 10 11. Dial it as an ordinary 0800 number.
Postbank or SASSA: who handles what
This is the distinction that saves the most time for grant recipients.
Postbank runs the bank account and the card. Call Postbank about a card that does not work, a PIN, a balance, a statement, or money that has not arrived in the account.
SASSA decides the grant itself. Postbank’s own guidance on applying is to go to your nearest SASSA office for the requirements and how to apply. Postbank cannot approve a grant, reinstate one, or tell you why an application was refused.
The 013 numbers alongside the SASSA enquiry line, 013 754 9439, 9428 and 9454, are ordinary landlines rather than toll free, so the 0800 number is the cheaper route.
Reporting fraud to Postbank
Postbank separates fraud into two mailboxes and it matters which you use.
- Fraud@postbank.co.za is for reporting a new fraud case. Postbank lists the same address for SASSA fraud.
- FraudEnquiry@postbank.co.za is for following up on a case already reported.
Sending a new report to the enquiry address delays it. Report first, then follow up.
Grant recipients are a heavily targeted group. Nobody from Postbank or SASSA will phone and ask for your card PIN or a one-time password, and no official will ask you to pay a fee to release a grant. If someone does, that is the fraud, and Fraud@postbank.co.za is where it goes.
What the SASSA card gives you free
Worth knowing before you pay for something you are entitled to. Postbank lists these as transactions at no cost to the beneficiary.
- One over-the-counter cash withdrawal at a Post Office branch a month.
- Three cash withdrawals at retail merchants a month, plus purchase and cash-back combinations at retailers.
- The first biometric chip card, and one replacement card a year.
- The first ATM balance enquiry each month, one mini statement at a Post Office branch, and a first full statement covering up to three months.
- The first PIN reset each year at a Post Office branch. PIN resets at SASSA offices are also listed as free.
The card works anywhere a Visa or Mastercard logo is displayed, and the account is restricted to social assistance payments as directed by SASSA.
Other Postbank mailboxes
- Updating your FICA or contact details: complete the form from the site and send it with supporting documents to PBFICA2@postbank.co.za.
- Tax certificates: taxcertificates@postbank.co.za.
- Group, stokvel and funeral enquiries: stockvelandfunerals@PostBank.co.za.
- Human resources: +27 12 407 6022 for head office and +27 51 411 1149 for operations. These are for job and staff matters, not customer queries.
Before you call
Postbank asks for a specific set of details, so have them ready: your account number, your identity number, a contact number, preferably a cellphone, and a clear description of the query.
For a grant payment question, have the grant type and the date you expected the money.
Postbank publishes no operating hours, so treat the 0800 lines as business hours on weekdays.
