Planning the Panorama Route around a stay
Graskop exists on most itineraries as a base rather than a destination, and the ordering of a day here decides whether you see anything at all.
- Go north early. God’s Window, the Pinnacle and Wonder View sit on the edge of the escarpment, where cloud builds through the morning. A viewpoint that is clear at seven can be solid white by ten.
- The Blyde River Canyon viewpoints are further, past Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and the drive takes longer than the map suggests because of the stops.
- Several viewpoints and the potholes charge an entrance fee, and card facilities are not reliable. Carry cash and ask the hotel what is current.
- Mist and rain are heaviest in summer, roughly November to March. Winter mornings are cold on the escarpment but far clearer.
- Kruger Mpumalanga International, near Mbombela, is the closest airport, around an hour and a half away. The Kruger Park gates below the escarpment are a common second leg.
- Fuel and cash before heading out. Graskop is small and the viewpoints have little in the way of services between them.
