Capitec does not publish a dedicated funeral cover telephone number. Its insurance products are serviced through the same Client Care Centre that handles banking, and that centre operates 24 hours a day.

Official provider route

Anyone advertising a Capitec funeral-cover-only number is not quoting the bank’s published contact page. Use the Client Care Centre and say at the start that the call concerns funeral cover, so it is routed to the insurance team rather than to banking.

Product or service support

Funeral cover sold through a bank is an insurance product rather than a banking product, even though it is bought and serviced through the bank’s channels. The premium is usually collected from a Capitec account, and the cover is governed by a policy schedule with its own terms.

That distinction matters at claim stage. A claim is assessed against the policy β€” the waiting period, the premium history and the beneficiaries recorded β€” rather than against your banking relationship. A long-standing account holder whose premiums lapsed is in the same position as anyone else whose premiums lapsed.

Capitec is an authorised financial services provider (FSP 46669) and a registered credit provider (NCRCP13), which is the licensing under which it distributes insurance.

Eligibility, account or policy requirements

Capitec publishes hours for its channels, which is useful here: the Client Care Centre runs 24 hours, while WhatsApp is available from 06:00 to 22:00. A death does not keep office hours, so the 24-hour line is the one to use out of hours.

Have your identity number and the account the premium is collected from ready. For a claim, you will generally need the death certificate, the identification of the deceased and of the claimant, and the policy or reference number.

Check that the premium collection is up to date before assuming a claim will pay. A funeral policy that has lapsed because a debit order failed is the single most common obstacle, and it is usually discovered at the worst possible moment.

Confirm who is recorded as the beneficiary while the policyholder is able to confirm it. Changing a nomination later, or proving entitlement without one, is considerably harder.

Escalation route

Ask for a reference number on the first call, and use WhatsApp or email where a written record would help β€” a funeral claim usually involves several exchanges over a few days, and a reference keeps them as one case.

If a claim is declined or delayed and Capitec’s internal complaints process does not resolve it, long-term insurance complaints in South Africa can be taken to the National Financial Ombud Scheme. Where the issue concerns advice given when the product was sold, the FAIS Ombud is the relevant body instead.

The licensing matters here more than it does on a banking page. Capitec Bank Limited, registration number 1980/003695/06, is an authorised financial services provider under FSP 46669 and a registered credit provider under NCRCP13. Funeral cover is sold under the financial services licence rather than the credit one, which is what determines where a complaint ultimately goes: an unresolved insurance complaint follows the financial services ombud route rather than the National Credit Regulator.

If you suspect fraud on the account the premium is collected from, Capitec instructs you to report the crime to the SAPS immediately and to contact its 24-hour Client Care Centre on 0860 10 20 43. Do both: the SAPS case number is usually needed for anything that follows. Capitec also publishes a separate complaints route on its website for service or product dissatisfaction, which is the correct next step rather than repeating the query on the general line.
