A caution about the published call centre number. The department’s own footer shows a call centre number with only nine digits, which is not a dialable South African toll-free number – those carry ten. It appears to be a placeholder that was never completed. This page does not reproduce it, because publishing a number that cannot connect is worse than publishing none.
The Head office, District offices and Communications office links in the site’s Contact menu are also unfinished – each points back to the homepage rather than to a contact page. No departmental email address is published.
Services and responsibilities
The department administers public schooling across KwaZulu-Natal, publishing past examination papers, the school calendar, policies, circulars and notices, tenders and the provincial list of schools.
Most parent and learner matters belong at district level, not head office. Admissions, placement, transfers, transport and school-level complaints are handled by the district office covering the school, and head office will refer you there. Identify the district from the school first – that single step saves the most time.
Before anything else, raise a school matter with the principal and the school governing body. The SGB is a statutory body with real authority over admissions and discipline, and the department expects that step to have been taken.

Head office: 228 Pietermaritz Street, Pietermaritzburg, 3201. The department does not publish office hours; provincial government offices generally work weekdays from 08:00 to 16:30, and are closed on public holidays.
District offices are spread across the province and are the working contact point for schools in their area. The department names Pinetown and Ndwedwe circuits among its districts, but does not publish a consolidated district contact list on the site.
Applications and escalation
Escalate in this order: the school principal, then the school governing body, then the district office, then head office in writing at the Pietermaritzburg address. Keep dates, names and copies – a written record is what an escalation rests on.
Because the department publishes no working telephone or email route, written correspondence to the head office address is the reliable formal channel.
If the department does not resolve a matter, maladministration by a provincial department can be taken to the Public Protector. Where a learner’s right to basic education is at stake, the South African Human Rights Commission also accepts complaints, and the national Department of Basic Education sets the policy the province implements.
