The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education runs its head office from Pietermaritzburg, but it is spread across six buildings in the city rather than one address, each with its own number. Which building you need depends entirely on what you are asking about.

The Pietermaritzburg buildings

Two of the department’s own published numbers are malformed and are given here corrected. The EX-NED number is printed with an extra digit, and the call centre number in the site footer is printed as an eight-digit string, which cannot be dialled. Neither is repeated here as printed.

The Durban offices are part of the same head office

Anything to do with the National Senior Certificate — a result, a remark, a certificate, an irregularity — is a Provincial Examinations matter and belongs to the Durban number, not to a Pietermaritzburg building.

Named officials, and why they are not listed here

The department publishes a contact person and an individual work mailbox against most of these buildings. Those are personal staff addresses rather than office ones, they change when staff change, and they are not repeated here. The building landline is the published route and it survives a transfer.

Start at the school, then the district

Head office sets policy, handles procurement, educator appointments and payroll, and answers for the department as a whole. Anything about a particular learner — admission, transfer, a fee exemption, a lost report — is handled by the school and then by the circuit or district office. The department publishes a District Offices directory alongside the head office one, and going straight to Pietermaritzburg with a learner query gets it sent back down the chain.
