One warning about the website: the footer of kzneducation.gov.za shows “Call centre: 0800 000 00”, which is an incomplete placeholder, not a working number. The real number, given on the department’s own call centre page, is the share call line 0860 596 363.
Is there a KZN education WhatsApp number?
Not for enquiries. The WhatsApp icon on the department’s site opens a WhatsApp channel, which is a one-way broadcast feed of departmental updates that you can follow but cannot reply to. There is no published WhatsApp number you can message for HR, admissions or examination queries. Use the call centre on 0860 596 363, the contact form on the website, or the district office that deals with your school.
Be careful with WhatsApp numbers circulated as “KZN Education” for jobs, results or placements. Nothing on the department’s site offers those over WhatsApp.
What the call centre handles
- Salary payments, pensions, internal policies, circulars, norms and standards, and examinations.
- HR and operational enquiries from serving and former employees, and questions from the public.
- Complaints, compliments and suggestions, and reports of fraud and corruption.
- Unresolved calls are referred to the relevant manager, and you are given a reference number to track the enquiry.
The department asks you to have your Persal number and ID number ready before you phone. Calls are recorded. If you are unhappy with how a query was handled, ask for the call centre manager or the complaints and public liaison officer.

If you do not know which circuit your school falls under, phone the district office in the table above and ask; they route it.
Common requests
- Matric certificates, re-issues, replacements and confirmation letters are handled by the certification section; the fee is set by Umalusi and is paid into the department’s banking account, so ask for the current amount before you pay.
- Check a new certificate immediately for spelling, ID number, date of birth and subject symbols. The department says errors must be reported within six months.
- Circulars, vacancies, tenders, the school calendar, past exam papers and the list of schools in KZN are all published on the website.
- Learner material sits on the KZN Funda e-learning portal, linked from the same site.
