Sizwe Hosmed handles pre-authorisation on a dedicated mailbox and number, separate from its general customer service line. Using the wrong one is the usual reason an authorisation is delayed.

Task scope

Pre-authorisation is confirmation from the scheme, obtained before a planned hospital admission or procedure, that the scheme will cover it. It is a different process from submitting a claim afterwards and from a referral from a general practitioner to a specialist.

Route

Requirements

The scheme asks that you email the authorisation request and then telephone to confirm it has been received, so the call is a confirmation step rather than an alternative to the email. Have your membership number, the treating provider details and the planned procedure to hand.

Steps

Related processes have their own routes and should not be sent to the authorisation mailbox. A new claim goes to claims@sizwehosmed.co.za and a follow-up on an existing claim to queries@sizwehosmed.co.za. A referral from a general practitioner to a specialist goes to primary.referrals@sizwehosmed.co.za. Chronic medication and chronic disease applications go to chronic@sizwehosmed.co.za on 086 010 3455, oncology to oncology@sizwehosmed.co.za on 086 010 3454, and the maternity programme to bambino@sizwehosmed.co.za on 086 000 0048.

Escalation

A complaint goes to the scheme principal officer, and the mailbox published for that uses a different spelling of the scheme domain, with a hyphen, so copy it exactly as printed rather than assuming it matches the others. If the scheme does not resolve a complaint, a medical scheme dispute in South Africa goes to the Council for Medical Schemes. Two cautions on the published numbers: the number printed beside the specialist referral mailbox is one digit short of a working number, so use the customer service line instead, and the whistleblowing line on 0800 212 150 is run by an outside company for reporting misconduct, not for authorisations.
