VFS Global runs visa and permit application centres on behalf of governments. In South Africa it operates the application centres for the Department of Home Affairs, and it also runs centres here for many other countries missions.
The single most important thing to understand: VFS Global does not decide applications. It takes in your paperwork and biometrics and passes them to the government concerned. An outcome, a delay or a refusal is the decision of Home Affairs or the relevant embassy, not of VFS.
Official contact channels
- Home Affairs helpline: 012 425 3000
- Home Affairs email: [email protected]
- Helpline hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00
- A click-to-talk chat route is published alongside the helpline
- Each destination country has its own separate VFS contact page and helpline
Note the gap in the middle of the day. The helpline closes from 12:00 to 13:00, so the window many people try over their own lunch break is exactly when nobody answers.
What this organisation provides
- Acceptance of temporary residence visa applications: general work, critical skills, intra-company transfer, corporate work, study, medical, retired person and business
- Visitor visa categories under section 11, including volunteer, research, academic sabbatical and exchange
- Permanent residence applications under sections 26 and 27, covering work, spouse, dependants, business, retired, relative and financially independent routes
- Waivers, appeals and exemptions for both temporary and permanent residence
- Appointment booking, fee payment, biometrics capture and application tracking
- Collection of the decision once the government has made it
Choosing the wrong category is the most common self-inflicted delay. A section 27 permanent residence route and a section 26 route carry different requirements, and an application lodged under the wrong one is not corrected at the centre; it is refused later by Home Affairs.
Address and operating information
- Application centres operate in major South African cities, with the list published per visa type
- Attendance is by appointment, booked through the VFS website
- Centre addresses and hours differ by the country you are applying to, even in the same city
- Fees are paid as part of the application process rather than at a counter on arrival
- Applications can be tracked online once lodged
Always confirm the centre address against the country you are applying to. The British, Dutch, Swiss and Home Affairs centres are separate operations with separate addresses and hours, and arriving at the wrong one loses your appointment slot.
Support and escalation routes
- Process, appointment and tracking queries: 012 425 3000 or [email protected]
- Service complaints about a centre: the VFS feedback route, which asks for your name, contact details and a clear description
- The outcome of an application is a matter for the Department of Home Affairs, or for the relevant embassy on a foreign visa
- Refusals of South African visas and permits are challenged through the Home Affairs appeal and waiver processes, which VFS accepts but does not decide
- Maladministration by a government department can be taken to the Public Protector
Keep your receipt and tracking number from the day you lodge. Both the centre and the department work from that reference, and reconstructing an application without it is far harder than keeping the slip.
