Aspen Pharmacare is a South African-headquartered pharmaceutical group with four separate sites in this country, each a different legal entity on a different number. Aspen’s own contact map publishes all four.

Aspen sites in South Africa

The four are not interchangeable. La Lucia is the listed holding company and the address for investor and corporate matters. Woodmead is the South African commercial business, and its website is aspenpharmasa.co.za. Korsten is manufacturing operations. Fine Chemicals in Epping makes active pharmaceutical ingredients and trades under its own name at fcc.co.za.

Which number to phone

Note that Aspen’s own contact map spells the Eastern Cape city as “Gqerberha”. That is a typo on their page; the city is Gqeberha. The street address and number are correct.

The scale behind the numbers

Aspen runs 23 manufacturing facilities across 15 sites worldwide, accredited by some of the most stringent regulatory agencies, and produces steriles, oral solid dose, liquids, semi-solids, biologicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients. Its business segments are Prescription, Over the Counter, Injectables and Manufacturing, and its regions are Africa Middle East, Americas, Asia, Australasia and Europe CIS. A query about an Aspen product sold outside South Africa usually belongs to the regional company rather than to Durban.

Reporting a problem with a medicine

A side effect or a suspected quality defect should go to SAHPRA as well as to the manufacturer, and a report from a patient counts. Keep the pack: the batch number and expiry date printed on it are what allow a batch to be traced, and a report without them cannot be followed up. If a batch has been recalled, return it to a pharmacy rather than to Aspen — the pharmacy will replace or refund it and the return is logged against the recall.
