The Gauteng Department of Health does not publish a switchboard number for Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital. That was checked four ways on 6 September 2026: the department’s own contacts page, its Promotion of Access to Information manual, its media relations contact list, and the provincial Institutions directory. The hospital appears in exactly one of them, and only as a media relations officer – a named official with a personal cellphone and a personal mailbox, which this directory does not republish. There is no public reception line to quote, and no number here is invented to fill the gap.

The routes Gauteng does publish

The provincial hotline is the working route for a complaint about a facility, because it is logged and given a reference. The MEC’s office is for escalation after the hotline, not instead of it, and it will normally push the matter back down to the district for a response.

Why a psychiatric hospital is harder to phone

Sterkfontein is a specialised psychiatric institution, not a general hospital, and admissions to it are largely not walk-in. Most people arrive through a referral – from a district hospital, a clinic, a magistrate’s court or the police – which means the person who can answer a question about a patient is usually the referring facility or the ward, reached through whoever handled the referral. If you are trying to trace an admission, the referring institution is a faster route than the switchboard would be even if one were published.

Where an urgent question actually belongs

If the department later publishes a direct line for the hospital, that becomes the better number and should replace everything above. Until then, a number circulating on a listing site for Sterkfontein has no first-party source behind it and is as likely to reach a disconnected extension as a switchboard.
