Tygerberg Hospital is a Western Cape Government tertiary hospital in Parow, Cape Town, and it runs around the clock, every day. The details below are the ones the provincial government publishes on its own health facility record.
Tygerberg Hospital contact details
- Switchboard: 021 938 4911
- Address: Francie van Zijl Avenue, Tygerberg, Cape Town 7505
- Complaints and compliments: tbh.complaints-compliments@westerncape.gov.za
- Operating hours: 24 hours a day, seven days a week
A note on that mailbox: the provincial facility record prints it with the domain spelled westercape.gov.za, missing the letter n. That is a typo on the government page. The correct provincial domain is westerncape.gov.za, and a message to the misspelled version will bounce.
The switchboard is not the right number for everything
021 938 4911 is a general switchboard for a hospital with thousands of beds and dozens of departments. Dental services are a separate facility on a separate number entirely — the Tygerberg Oral Health Centre and the Tygerberg Community Dental Clinic, both on Francie van Zijl Drive, are not reachable through the hospital switchboard. Outpatient departments each have their own extension, published by the province as a separate contact list.
- A clinic appointment: ask the switchboard for the specific outpatient department by name, not for “outpatients”.
- Ward enquiries about a patient: give the ward name or number, which is on the admission paperwork.
- A complaint about care received: use the complaints and compliments mailbox rather than the switchboard, which cannot log one.
Getting seen at all
Tygerberg is a tertiary hospital, which means it takes referrals from clinics and district hospitals rather than walk-ins for routine care. Arriving without a referral for anything other than an emergency usually means being sent back down the chain. The exception is the emergency centre, which takes emergencies directly and around the clock. Tygerberg serves a large drainage area across the northern suburbs and beyond, and it is a teaching hospital, so a patient may be seen by registrars and students under supervision.
If the hospital does not resolve a complaint
- The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness sits above the hospital and has its own complaints route on westerncape.gov.za.
- The Office of Health Standards Compliance is the national regulator for complaints about the standard of care in any public or private facility.
- The Health Ombud investigates serious complaints once the facility and the department have been given a chance to respond.
