Sanlam Trust is not a department inside Sanlam. Sanlam’s own site says it has partnered with Sanlam Trust, which is part of the Capital Legacy Group and a Sanlam associate, to provide wills, trusts and estate administration. What to expect on an estate

The process starts when the family reports the death and a consultant is allocated. The consultant arranges a meeting with the heirs to collect documents and signatures, and the administrator then applies to the Master of the High Court for a Letter of Executorship. Sanlam notes that the Master’s office recommends reporting an estate within 14 days of death.

On timing, Sanlam Trust is candid: its business rule is to try to finalise an estate within 12 to 18 months, and estates with complications can take longer. Nothing can be paid out of an estate until the Letter of Executorship or Letter of Authority has been issued, so a delay at the Master’s office holds up everything behind it.

Support and escalation routes

Ask the estate consultant for a written status and a list of outstanding items if an estate is slow. The administration is supervised by the Master of the High Court, which also deals with objections to how an estate is being handled. Sanlam funeral and life claims on the same death are separate from the estate and go through Sanlam’s claims process, not through Sanlam Trust.
