The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is the statutory national standardisation body, founded in September 1945 under the Standards Act, 1945, and now operating under the Standards Act, 2008 (Act No. 8 of 2008).
The SABS is not the SABC, the public broadcaster, and it is not the NRCS, which is a separate body that regulates compulsory specifications.

Services and responsibilities
The SABS is mandated to develop, promote and maintain South African National Standards (SANS), to promote quality and to render conformity assessment services. It is South Africa’s member of ISO and IEC.
The SABS sells SANS documents as well as CKS, SATS and SATR documents, and ISO and IEC standards. It can also source foreign standards, such as British or German DIN standards.
